Multipoint Door Lock Repairs for uPVC & Composite Doors
If your uPVC or composite door won’t lock properly, the handle is stiff, or the key won’t turn, the problem is often a worn or failed multipoint locking mechanism. I repair and replace multipoint door locks across Exeter and East Devon.
Most modern uPVC and composite doors use a multipoint locking system which locks the door at several points along the frame.
Over time these mechanisms can wear, the door may drop slightly, or the lock can fail completely. This can cause problems such as the door not locking, the handle becoming stiff, or the key refusing to turn.
I provide multipoint door lock repairs across Exeter, Cranbrook, Exmouth and surrounding areas, often fixing the problem without needing to replace the entire door.
Common Multipoint Lock Problems
Common issues include:
uPVC door handle lifts but won't lock
door won’t lock unless lifted hard
key won’t turn in the lock
door stuck locked or unlocked
door handle won’t move
door catching when locking
door handle goes up but the door won’t lock
gearbox failure inside the mechanism
door won’t close properly
door dropped and misaligned
Many of these issues can be repaired by adjusting the door, replacing the gearbox, or fitting a new multipoint mechanism.
Repair Instead Of Replacement
When a uPVC door stops locking properly many people assume the entire door needs replacing.
In most cases this isn’t necessary.
A locksmith can usually repair the locking system by:
adjusting the hinges
replacing worn parts in the mechanism
fitting a new multipoint lock strip
This is usually much cheaper than replacing the whole door.

FAQ
Why does my uPVC door handle lift but not lock?
This usually means the multipoint locking mechanism inside the door has worn out or failed. Sometimes the door has dropped slightly and needs adjusting so the locking points line up properly with the frame.
Why do I have to lift my door to lock it?
Over time uPVC doors can drop slightly due to weight and regular use. When this happens the locking points no longer align correctly with the keeps in the frame. A locksmith can normally adjust the door to fix the issue.
Can a multipoint lock be repaired?
Yes. In many cases the gearbox or multipoint lock mechanism can be replaced without needing a new door. A locksmith can normally repair or replace the faulty parts.
Why is my uPVC / Composite door handle stiff or difficult to lift?
A stiff handle is usually a sign that the locking mechanism is beginning to fail or the door has moved out of alignment. Getting it repaired early can prevent the door becoming completely stuck
What should I do if my uPVC or composite door won’t lock?
If your door won’t lock properly it’s best to have it checked before the mechanism fails completely. Many problems can be repaired by adjusting the door or replacing the locking mechanism.
Can composite door locks be repaired?
Yes. Most composite doors use a multipoint locking mechanism similar to uPVC doors. If the door is difficult to lock, the handle is stiff, or the key won’t turn properly, the locking mechanism or gearbox can usually be repaired or replaced without needing a new door.
What should I do if my door won’t open or unlock?
If your door will not open or unlock it may be due to a failed multipoint locking mechanism or a problem with the gearbox inside the lock. In some cases the door may also have dropped out of alignment. A locksmith can normally open the door and repair or replace the faulty parts.
